Graduating more doctors and health professionals for B.C.
How UBC’s distributed medical education program continues to transform education and health across the province and beyond.

In 2004, the UBC Faculty of Medicine (the Faculty) forged a new and ambitious plan to help meet the growing and diverse healthcare needs of patients and communities across the vast and rugged province of British Columbia (B.C.).
With support from the Government of B.C., its academic partners and all health authorities, the Faculty expanded and distributed its medical education and training programs to the farthest corners of the province to help graduate more doctors for B.C., and provide greater equity and access for learners to train and live closer to home.
The medical program was the first of its kind in North America, propelling UBC into the spotlight as a global leader in distributed medical education.
Building on the foundation of its success, the Faculty expanded the programs again in 2023, welcoming the largest group of first-year UBC medical students and resident doctors in its history.
“None of this would be possible without the unwavering commitment and dedication of thousands of faculty, clinical faculty and staff who continue to enable the transformation and growth of medical and health professions education in B.C.”
Dr. Roger Wong
Today, more than 1,000 UBC medical students and 1,440 UBC resident doctors are learning and training in communities such as Haida Gwaii, Prince Rupert, Fort St. John, Ladysmith, Kamloops, Surrey and more.
UBC resident doctors in a wide range of distributed programs — including family medicine, emergency medicine, pediatrics, psychiatry and internal medicine — are also enhancing the delivery of care for patients and their families across each region.

The impact of the program has been far-reaching, as approximately 93 per cent of medical learners who complete their undergraduate medical education (MD) and postgraduate medical education residency training at UBC stay in B.C. to practice.
As a global model of excellence, the achievements of UBC’s distributed medical education programs have also included the development and expansion of UBC’s health professional programs such as physical therapy, occupational therapy and midwifery — further increasing the network of healthcare professionals across the province.
“None of this would be possible without the unwavering commitment and dedication of thousands of faculty, clinical faculty and staff who continue to enable the transformation and growth of medical and health professions education in B.C.,” says Dr. Roger, Vice Dean, Education, Faculty of Medicine.
It’s the people within the Faculty who are the heart of the program and who are deeply committed to the Faculty’s vision, transforming health for everyone, he says. And each day, they are the ones who are training, supporting, sustaining and reshaping the future of healthcare in B.C. and beyond.
In recognition of the incredible contributions of the Faculty of Medicine community, we reached out to a few members to learn more about what it means to them to help train and graduate more doctors and health professionals for patients and communities across B.C.
